Commercial Driver's License Training
FMCSA provides commercial motor vehicle safety training to Federal and State personnel through courses given by the agency's National Training Center (NTC). NTC currently has three courses for law enforcement officers that offer training for a commercial driver's licenses (CDL). These courses are (1) Compliance Reviews, (2) Safety Audits, and (3) Safety Academy for all new Federal field enforcement personnel.
The CDL training in these three courses includes:
- Part 383 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs)
- Purpose and Scope
- Applicability and Exceptions
- Definitions
- Single License Requirement
- Vehicle Groups, Endorsements, and Restrictions
- Citation to Conviction Process
- Driver Record Checks Using CDLIS
- Understanding CDLIS Reports
- Fraud in the CDL Program
- National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS)
- History of CDL
- Part State Compliance CDL Program
- Transportation Safety Administration Hazardous Materials Security Threat Assessment
In addition to these three courses being offered to Federal and State enforcement personnel, FMCSA is also developing a course to provide CDL training to FMCSA's Division Office and Service Center personnel who conduct management oversight of each State's CDL program. This course will be designed to allow Federal personnel to conduct annual processes with their State counterparts to ensure the State is in compliance with Part 383 and Part 384 of the FMCRS.
