The Executive Committee provides vision and direction to the subcommittees to meet the mission and goal of the DOT TRCC.

Steven Smith, Deputy Director, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA)

Steven K. Smith currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) in the Research and Innovative Technology Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation. At BTS, he has focused on expanding web-based access to transportation data, particularly through the use of geo-spatial mapping applications. Dr. Smith has a background in survey research and has directed a number of large scale national data collection programs. Previously he has conducted survey and statistical work at the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Dr. Smith received a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.


Michael Griffith, Director of the Office of Safety Integration, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

Michael Griffith has worked for the Department of Transportation for over 20 years primarily in research organizations. His work has been published in a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals. He currently serves as the Director for FHWA's Office of Safety Integration. Michael provides national leadership for policy initiatives, data improvement and analysis efforts, and evaluation activities. In a recent previous position, he was the Director for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Office of Analysis, Research, and Technology.

Michael has a Master's degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Maryland, a Master's degree in Statistics from SUNY Buffalo, and a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Ithaca College.


Terry Shelton, Associate Administrator for Research and Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

Ms. Shelton is the Associate Administrator for Research and Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration within the U.S. Department of Transportation. She has also served as Acting Associate Administrator for Administration and as Acting Chief Safety Officer for FMCSA. Ms. Shelton has worked in statistical analysis and information systems in the traffic safety arena for almost 24 years, first at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and then at FMCSA. In addition to her work at these DOT safety agencies, she acted as interim Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Prior to coming to the Department of Transportation, Ms. Shelton worked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U. S. Department of Labor.


Marilena Amoni, Associate Administrator, National Center for Statistics and Analysis, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Marilena Amoni is the Associate Administrator, National Center for Statistics and Analysis, Vehicle Safety Programs for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. She joined NCSA in November 2008 after completing a six month executive mobility assignment. She is responsible for overseeing data collection and analysis, crash investigation, program evaluation, traffic records, National Driver Register and information dissemination.

She graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with an MS in Public Administration, and a BS and BA in Management Sciences and Urban Studies.

Ms. Amoni was the Associate Administrator for Research and Program Development, Traffic Injury Control for the previous seven years responsible for behavioral research, program development and implementation in traffic safety programs with the States and professional associations. She has thirty years experience in the field of highway safety in both behavioral and vehicular programs. She began her career in the Presidential Management Fellow as a program analyst in Vehicle Safety Programs.
